Waterfowl Counts - February 2025

What are the Waterfowl Counts? Why are they important?

The Field & Game Australia - Victorian Waterfowl Counts are conducted twice a year (in February and November), with the next counts beginning on the 12th of February 2025. These counts rely on a range of geographically dispersed volunteers going out into their local wetlands to count and observe game and non-game bird populations, as well as their breeding patterns and environments.

This information is then provided to the FGA National Office, to be collated, analysed and distributed.

The Waterfowl Counts allow us to develop an understanding of bird numbers, behaviours, and migration patterns, and enables us to gather information regarding habitat destruction, creation and variation. It is this knowledge that enables Field & Game Australia to liaise with key decision makers and stakeholders to promote the progression and development of sustainable game-bird hunting and conservation.

Why get involved?

The Waterfowl Counts are a valuable opportunity to deepen your involvement in the conservation and management of ducks, game birds, and their habitats. The data collected during these waterfowl counts is crucial for Field & Game Australia in advocating for sustainable and ethical practices in duck and game bird hunting and management.

Additionally, the Waterfowl Counts can be used as an opportunity for new hunters to become educated on gamebirds and for experienced hunters to refresh their knowledge. These counts encourage volunteers to practice their duck identification skills, learn to accurately estimate distance, improve their bird calls, and develop a successful retrieval plan. We recommend that all new volunteers buddy up with an experienced hunter and learn from their experience!

How to get involved?

All volunteers are welcome, no matter your experience, availability or location.
