Parties that support Hunting and Shooting beyond 2022

Published Mon 21 Nov 2022

Field & Game Australia (FGA), along with Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (VIC) and Australian Deer association have been prosecuting initiatives to improve public land access and management, safeguard game hunting, improve shooting facilities, ensure robust consultation and promote shooting to the broader community.
It is crucial to secure clear commitments on these issues to provide a solid platform for shooting and hunting for the next four years.
To this end - we presented a raft of initiatives to all of the major political parties ahead of this weekends election.

Some of the points tabled have asked the candidates for specific election commitments on:

  • Better management of Victoria’s State Game Reserves,
  • An improved Shooting Sports Facilities Program;
  • Full implementation of the Adaptive Harvest Model for waterfowl and improved decision-making processes and timelines for hunting seasons;
  • New legislation to enshrine the role and functions of the Victorian Firearms Consultative Committee.

Those that chose to respond in writing are:

Democratic Labour Party
"I'm happy to advise the DLP agrees with all the dot points you have listed" (Steve Campbell - Federal Secretary - Democratic Labour Party)

Liberals and Nationals
Thank you for sharing your Shooting and Hunting in Victoria 2022-2026 platform with the Liberals and Nationals. Our parties recognise the role of Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Victoria (SSAA), Field and Game Australia (FGA) and the Australian Deer Association (ADA) as Victoria’s peak shooting and hunting organisations. (complete response here) - (Hon. Peter Walsh - MP)

Liberal Democrats
“Rest assured that any Liberal Democrats in the Victorian Parliament will do what we can to resist further government restrictions on deer and duck hunting, and firearms more broadly.” - (David Limbrick)

Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party
 “I am pleased to confirm that the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party of Victoria will support and advocate for every currently sought commitment. I see these commitments as reasonable and easily accommodated by either side of politics and the SFFP Vic will assist in any way we can.” - ( Jeff Bourman - MP)

Labor
The Labor Government has highlighted its past record and investments in shooting and hunting, noting “improvements to ensure the duck and quail hunting season arrangements are science-based and sustainable”, - (The Hon Gayle Tierney MP)
but has not made any specific commitments for the next term.

In the Upper house, Voting Below the line for the 5 (or more) individual candidates from the parties you wish to support is the only way to ensure your votes go where you want them, and are not given as preferances to other parties!
